The chain of islands formed over millions of years, with the northwestern islands being the oldest and most eroded and the southeastern islands, including the island of Hawaii, being the youngest and most active volcanically.
Kilauea on the island of Hawaii famously erupted in May 2018, wiping out neighborhoods and towns. Lōihi Seamount is an active submarine volcano about 20 miles southeast of the island of Hawaii that geologists expect to rise above sea level between 10,000 and 100,000 years from now.
