The guanaco is one of the iconic animals of the Patagonian Steppe. Guanacos, llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas are all part of the same biological family, Camelidae, along with dromedary camels and Bactrian camels. Camelids have distinct characteristics. They don’t have horns or hooves; instead, their two-toed feet have toenails and soft pads. Their lips are split into two independent and separately mobile parts. And they all spit when angry. DNA testing has shown that llamas are domesticated guanacos, while alpacas are domesticated vicuñas. Guanacos and llamas have coarse hair, while vicuñas and alpacas have the most sought-after wool in the world.
