In his series ‘Anarchy Tamed’, British photographer @JoePettetSmith documented the world’s largest post-apocalyptic-themed festival, Wasteland Weekend: every year 4000 enthusiasts from around the world gather in the Mojave Desert, California, to recreate the world of ‘Mad Max’, the dystopian action film series directed by George Miller. Now in its eighth year, the festival takes place in between the defunct Nevada Nuclear Test Site – where from 1951 a total of 928 nuclear warheads were tested during the cold war – and Hollywood. Drawn to the promise of chaos and freedom, people dressed in haphazard combinations of leather, weathered sportswear and pseudo-military uniforms happily enjoy “the end of the world” together.
