Photo by @stephenedwardferry | Thanksgiving | In this 2003 photograph, indigenous Arhuaco mamos, or spritual elders, undertake a pilgrimage to sacred sites around the base of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain in Colombia to defend their people against violence perpetrated by all parties to the Colombian conflict. To carry out this mission of spiritual resistance, these Arhuaco men bravely travelled through territory controlled by hostile paramiltary forces. Here their path is blocked by a passing train carrying coal to nearby ports.
I have no wish to tarnish a lovely family holiday, but it seems right to also reflect on the history of Thanksgiving. As I was taught in grade school, the holiday celebrates the friendshio between native peoples and the first Plymouth colonists. This comforting story is based on a harvest feast which took place in 1621 betweeen some 90 Wampanoags, led by their chief Ousemequin, and some 50 Puritan settlers in Plymouth, Massachussetts.
A half century after this “first Thanksgiving feast,” war broke out between the Wampanoag and the English colonists. According to historians, the Wampanoags’ change of heart toward the English was due to the often forced sale of land to settlers and the attempt by the English to reduce the Wampanoag people to be subjects of the English crown. The colonists won this bloody conflict and as a trophy they displayed the severed head of Ousemequin’s son Matecom on a stake in Plymouth, Mass. for 25 years. Matecom’s body was dismemebered and hung from nearby trees where it was left to rot.
This war, which is sometimes called the First Indian War, marks the beginning of the armed decimation of native cutlures by colonial and then United States' governments that continued over centuries.
Despite this terrible history, native peoples in both South and North America continue to resist, as evidenced by their recent stand against the Dakota Access oil pipeline at Standing Rock. | #thanksgiving #nativepeoples #wampanoag #standingrock #arhuaco #resistance
