This self-portrait was made by Käthe Kollwitz in 1924 when she was 57 years old – a decade after the death of her youngest son in WWI, which prompted a prolonged depression.
Much of her work centres on the poor and dispossessed, and her two great series – ‘A Weavers’ Revolt’ and ‘Peasants’ War’ – show the pervasiveness of death, grief and war.
