The castle up on a volcanic crag looms over a thousand years of history (some deliciously sordid) as the centerpiece of the vibrant life all around. I feel history lurking everywhere as I hike down the Royal Mile, past Holyrood Palace, around St. Margaret’s Loch, under the ruins of St. Anthony’s Chapel, and up to Arthur’s Seat. Sometimes I follow the Water of Leith walkway down to the harbor or sit by the Forth Bridge (that incomparable Victorian symbol of Scottish engineering), waiting to hear a train taking travelers off to the Highlands. To end the day, I like to stroll down storied Princes Street in search of a single malt whisky.
