When #DavideSorrenti appeared on the New York scene, he was like an angel from above. Young, gorgeous, fragile, his body weakened by thalassemia, and the sensation that he had not long to live, hence the need and desire to experience everything in the short amount of time that he was allowed on this earth. A terrible limitation to some, a formidable lesson of freedom and a challenge for others; this was undoubtedly true for Davide, that turned that predicament into the drive for an unforgettable artistic production, spanning from graffiti to fashion photography. Those were the ‘90s and Davide became, despite himself, the posterchild of a certain ‘Heroin chic’ aesthetic that characterized fashion photography in that decade paying tribute, on the one hand, to Larry Clark’s 60s and Nan Goldin’s 70s and, on the other, fighting back the excesses and the cult of wealth and success typical of the 80s. Today, in order to better understand the legacy of Davide Sorrenti, we can rely on Charlie Curran’s documentary ‘See Know Evil’ and, most of all, the magnificent volume written by his mother, Francesca, titled ‘Davide Sorrenti ArgueSKE. 1994-1997’, whose inscription reads, “I dedicate this book to my son Davide, whose life and creativity never cease to amaze me after all these years”. An essential tribute to protect Davide’s work from superficial prejudices and from the judgment of history, which can be far too prone to eliminate them.
