This elephant is named Craig and he is one of the last remaining “big tuskers” on the planet. A “tusker” is a term given to elephants who have tusks that almost reach the ground. These were once an extremely common sight across the African continent, but due to decades of hunting and poaching, there are less than 30 remaining today. Since these elephants are such large targets for the ivory trade, they are heavily monitored and guarded today. There is hope however that more “tuskers” may be on the way as conservationists and researchers are monitoring individuals who appear to be on track to breaking tusk length records within the next few decades. Even though the males with extremely large tusks may not be the largest bodied elephants, the weight and length of their extended teeth help with reproductive success as other males tend to back down when sizing up against a large tusked elephant.
