In 1977, a fossil of the Majorcan midwife toad was discovered on the island of Majorca - it wasn’t until three years later that living toads were sighted in the wild. Measuring in at only four centimeters, this is one of the smallest toad species known to science, but it is better known for its reproductive peculiarities. Males, like the one pictured here, carry eggs laid by the females on their backs for the entire maturation period, making sure to keep them wet as they develop. Once the eggs are about to hatch, the male will submerge himself in water so tadpoles can be set free. While there are many eggs in each egg mass, survival in the wild is still a challenge for the Majorcan midwife toad. The Romans are believed to have introduced a wide range of species on Majorca, including animals like the genet, the European pine marten,and the false smooth snake. The presence of these and several other introduced species has contributed to an almost complete extinction of animals endemic to the Balearic Islands like the Majorcan midwife toad. Today, this species survives in areas inaccessible to these predators, such as the steepest mountain stream areas of the Tramuntana’s mountain range.
