Photo by @amytoensing | A neighbor extends a hand during a branding in Phillips County, Montana. Many families in this region have been ranching for over 125 years, and being able to rely on your neighbor is a huge part of surviving and thriving in such a remote area. “You never leave anyone stuck in a ditch because you never know when that might be you,” one rancher told me. But many of these families are concerned about the impact a large conservation project in the region will have on their way of life. In the February issue, “Prairie Divide” looks at this conservation project underway in central Montana and how it’s affecting the land and the people who live there.
