Temps Gris’ is a classic example of Paul Signac’s Opus pictures which are now seen as his earliest and greatest contributions to Neo-Impressionism. Signac’s family moved to the northwest of Paris in 1880, to a suburb running along the river Seine, where the varied landscape of the region provided a great source of inspiration to the young artist, fulfilling his interests in sailing, science and innovation. This elegant, pointillist composition was discovered in the possession of Cornelius Gurlitt, a reclusive art hoarder who died in 2014, and having been identified as looted by the Nazis, was restituted by the estate to the heirs of Gaston Lévy in July 2019.
