This supermoon appears about 17 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a typical full Moon. One of the cool things about the full Moon is that you can clearly see the light and dark areas, the main geologic features on the Moon. The dark areas are ancient lava flows, which are about 3.5 BILLION years old! For me, it’s so exciting that we can clearly see the traces of ancient geologic activity with our naked eyes, a history uniquely recorded on the lunar surface. One of the reasons we know so much about the Moon is because from 1969 to 1972, we sent six crews of astronauts to the lunar surface. The astronauts brought back an amazing set of samples that help us unravel the history of the Moon and through that, the entire solar system. I have a direct connection to those exciting missions — my father was an engineer who helped design and build parts of the astronauts’ backpacks and their lunar module. It’s no stretch to say that lunar exploration is in my blood! What questions do you have about the supermoon and exploration of our nearest neighbor in space?
