In 1919 towards the end of World War I the worst influenza pandemic ever recorded arrived in Australia. In NSW 40% of the population contracted the disease. Special measures were taken including compulsory wearing of masks in public places, establishing treatment centres and restricting the number of people attending gatherings. The Influenza Emergency Committee set up many emergency centres across Sydney. The centres were managed by medical staff and assisted by large numbers of volunteers. This badge was issued by the Committee to volunteers helping during the pandemic. These badges are extremely rare as volunteers did not want to be identified as being in contact with those infected.
