In the 1930s Australian artist Margaret Preston travelled through Beppu on the island of Kyushu, Japan – a place renowned for its hot springs created by Mount Aso. This was one of many trips that she documented through a series of ‘snapshot’ albums that brought together personal photographs, diary notes and postcards. These albums remained undisturbed in a cupboard in the Department of Chinese Studies at Sydney University for many years until they were transferred to the Powerhouse in 1996.
