Happy birthday Dr Birute Mary Galdikas!
In honour of Dr. Galdikas' birthday and Mother's Day today, we are sharing the story of orangutan female Akmad .... Akmad was the first female orangutan Dr. Galdikas rescued from captivity and returned to the forest in Camp Leakey in the early 1970s. Unlike some other orangutans who disappeared into the jungle at the first opportunity, Akmad was different. She formed a maternal-like bond with Dr. Galdikas and became her first adopted orangutan "daughter". Akmad was at least 7 to 8 years old when she came to Dr. Galdikas. Over the years, Akmad continued to visit Dr. Galdikas at Camp Leakey and has not only had multiple offspring but also at least several grand offspring.
Their friendship would end up lasting nearly five decades. In the early years of orangutan research, Akmad demonstrated to Dr. Galdikas just how individual these great apes could be.
