This year is the 50th anniversary of New York City's first #pride march, which marked one year since the Stonewall uprising, when police raided the city’s Stonewall Inn. Stonewall was solidified as a key moment in the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement by the pride marches that began a year later.
Marsha P. Johnson—a self-identified drag queen and a prominent gay liberation activist—participated in the Stonewall riots and in the march on the anniversary in 1970.
After Stonewall, Johnson’s activism continued. She joined the Gay Liberation Front, ACT UP, and cofounded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with Sylvia Rivera. She also helped establish the STAR House for LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness.
When pride march organizers banned drag queens (including Johnson) from participating in 1973, she and Rivera marched ahead of the parade.
This button was distributed at a memorial for Johnson and was donated to our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館. #SmithsonianPride #PrideMonth #BecauseOfHerStory
