Get to know: Iwao Yamawaki (1898–1987), born Iwao Fujita in Nagasaki, was a Japanese photographer, architect and educator.⁣

Yamawaki studied architecture at the Tokyo University of the Arts from 1921 to 1926 and after graduating worked as an architect in a construction company. During this time, he took pictures with his 35mm camera to support and document his architectural studies. In 1931 he travelled to Germany to study at the Bauhaus in Dessau where he became heavily influenced by Hungarian artist László Moholy-Nagy and his idea that photography could open up new ways of seeing the world, beyond those available to the human eye. 👁️⁣

From 1930 to 1933, Yamawaki focused his camera on architectural studies (both interior and exterior), portraits and still lifes, making straight images, dominated by contrasts of line and form, often taken from unexpected steep angles or viewpoints. His work is representative of the theories being taught at the Bauhaus, emphasising simple, sculptural forms. ⁣

After his time in Germany, Yamawaki returned to Japan with his wife Michiko Yamawaki and started his career as a leading architect and teacher. While he continued his interest in the teachings of the Bauhaus, his work as a photographer came to an end. However, his short career with a camera produced a portfolio of well composed, stylish and elegant photographs, brimming with the confidence of modernism. ⁣
