"I will never apologize for being black.

I was raised to be proud of my heritage. I was raised to hold my head high when others were intimidated by my presence alone. I was raised to work twice as hard. That's just what we do. That being said, I was also raised with the consciousness that not everyone will see my black as beautiful. Not everyone will believe that I've deserved, or better yet earned, my seat at the table. Not everyone will think my life is worth the same as my fellow American’s.

But you better believe that my blood bleeds the same. It bleeds the same as Trayvon Martin's, Mike Brown's, Eric Garner's, Sandra Bland's, Tamir Rice's, Alton Sterling's, and Philando Castile's. And for that, I won't apologize. I can't apologize, because, despite the daily reminder that you can be shot in cold blood simply due to the amount of melanin in your skin, I have never been more proud to be a black woman. We are a resilient force, and have never had the luxury of being anything different. We will stay resilient until the war is won.

So excuse me as I walk with a purpose today and every day. I'm just being unapologetically black."
