Foysal was among the most gravely ill COVID-19 patients in the country, though after 55 days in the ICU, he's making great strides. He is on an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine, which pumps and oxygenates a patient's blood—essentially doing the job of the lungs externally in order to give the body a chance to recover. Royal Papworth is one of only five hospitals in England to provide ECMO machines for respiratory failure, and its critical care unit was among those in England that took part in the trial for the steroid called dexamethasone, which has been shown to reduce mortality in severely ill COVID-19 patients. The official government death toll of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom is one of the highest in the world, with over 41,000 deaths. To see more of my work follow @lynseyaddario.
