Lofoten, Vesterålen, and Senja make up a chain of islands where a millennia ago glaciers created fjords, cutting the land into a series of inlets bordered by steep cliffs—stone giants asleep in the sea. The continental shelf off the coast is very narrow. In some places it stretches for only a few kilometers; in others, for some 35-40 kilometers (20-25 miles); and in still others it suddenly drops off, the depths plunging from a few hundred to a few thousand meters. This is one reason why these islands are so special. Water rich with nutrients from the deep Atlantic flows up and outward—the lifeblood of the marine ecosystem on which humans have long depended.
