And, once more, happy Juneteenth! @soulsinfocus here to share a final selection of portraits from this afternoon. We photographed those attending Juneteenth celebrations and demonstrations on the Museum’s plaza and asked them to answer what Juneteenth means to them today. If you didn’t see your portrait today, no worries, the Brooklyn Museum team will be creating a Facebook photo album of all the photos taken today! ⠀

Unnamed Group ⇨ Alexa: Today, Juneteenth means honoring Black rebellion against systematic oppression. We’re in a state in our country and culture where we can no longer exist living with systemic racism that reigns supreme. We must continue our rebellion, calling our injustices and demanding white and non-Black allies to stand up with us. ⇨ Patrick and R: It’s a celebration for freedom but more work needs to be done. We have so much further to go. ⇨ Maya ⇨ Unnamed ⇨ Kenneth: BLACK PRIDE! ⇨ Laura: Remembering the resilience, power, and strength of my ancestors. ⇨ Alexandra and Ian ⇨ Unnamed ⇨ Naquan: Day of celebration for my people. We’re not only waking up (again) but this time we are staying awake.⠀
