Photo by @stevewinterphoto | This image is special to me because it shows a leopard and her two cubs. Mom is preparing to go hunting and will place her cubs in a protected den while she's away. Here, she's on the lookout for predators like hyenas. Did you know that female big cats are philopatric? That means daughters stay near the area where they were born, taking a piece of the home range. That being said, they are fiercely territorial. If you were to look at the savanna where leopards live from a bird's-eye view, you would see that leopard females live in a matrilineal kin cluster—females that are largely all related—moms, aunts, daughters, sisters. Male leopards are completely different, and travel hundreds if not thousands of kilometers to find their own homes.
