The artist spent this time reflecting on her late older half-sister, Chi Chan, who was mentally disabled and often isolated from the rest of society. But the two of them had a bond. Chi Chan became Shimojo's de facto art teacher. Together they would create together to escape an often dramatic and sometimes tragic childhood.⁠ ⁠ "Drawing with Chi Chan as a child was the most important influence of my art practice. Making art with her was my sanctuary. She used to draw strange monkey-like figures with bold patterns. She picked wild colors. She instilled in me a creative freedom that defines my work today. I have been inspired by Creative Growth for a long time, and now wish to give back to help a community that formed me as an artist."⁠ ⁠ 10% of profits will be donated to Creative Growth (@creativegrowth), the Oakland, California-based not-for-profit that serves artists with disabilities by providing a professional studio environment for artistic development, gallery exhibition, and representation.
