Last August, McClain was detained by police while walking home and listening to music after someone called to report a "suspicious person." At one point, after McClain was put in what the police report describes as a “carotid control hold,” or a type of chokehold, he is heard saying, "I can’t breathe. Please stop." He was later injected with ketamine by a fire medic and suffered cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital. McClain was taken off life support six days later. "Black men and women are killed by law enforcement in this country more often than any of us would like to ever admit and it shouldn’t require public outrage for people to get justice," Mari Newman, an attorney for the McClain family, tells TIME. "The family and I called for an independent investigation last fall and all we heard was crickets."
