Happy birthday to Arakawa, born on this day, July 6, in Nagoya, Japan.

In 1961, Arakawa arrived in New York with $14 in his pocket and Marcel Duchamp's phone number. He would go on to become a renowned conceptual artist and architect.

Employing maps, language, and diagrams in his work, Arakawa's paintings play with modes of communication, creating a game between the artwork and viewer, while exploring the mechanics of how these modes are perceived. Later in his life, in close collaboration with the American poet Madeline Gins, Arakawa developed this artistic language into theories of architecture, investigating how to positively restructure the body's relationship with the outside world.
