We sat down to discuss the environmental crisis we are facing, her activism to protect our land and water, the generational and pervasive harm of environmental racism, and how it’s affected Indigenous peoples, and how we can join the call to defend our planet’s future. • Tara’s story of working as a tribal attorney and an activist will inspire you to dig deep in your communities and think about the future in new ways. Her efforts, and the efforts of her organization, @giniwcollective, helped usher in a major environmental victory this week, the stoppage of the Keystone XL pipeline. It’s an important win in a huge, long lasting fight. Likewise, her non-profit organization #NotYourMascots, is doing incredibly powerful work around removing racist representations of Indigenous peoples from sports teams. It’s been time, y’all. The erasure of Indigenous peoples and their experiences must be addressed, atoned for, and remedied. “Invisibility has many different outcomes but some of them are extremely deadly. And that’s happening across the board for lots of people.” - @zhaabowekwe on today’s episode of #WIP. • Tara also talks us through the impacts of whitewashing history and the erasure of whole communities, the importance of treaties and how as a nation we’ve repeatedly violated them, what this has meant for generations of Indigenous people, the lack of federal response to violence against Native women, and much more. Tara also talks about how we can lend our support and what justice really looks like. This episode means so much to me, and I believe it will mean so much to us all, at it illuminates options of a more united future. We have to show up for each other, y’all.
