The Golden Triangle is the area where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers. The name "Golden Triangle"—coined by the CIA is known for its opium production which is processed to make heroin. Most of the world's heroin came from the Golden Triangle until the early 21st century when Afghanistan became the world's largest producer. The “gold” in Golden Triangle refers to the highly lucrative opium trade but today stands more for the booming tourist trade there as well. Here on a Thai Border Police poppy destroying mission, I hitched a ride on a helicopter swooping in on steep hillsides, unleashing dozens of camouflage clad soldiers to beat down the poppies with bamboo staves. Evidence of recently scored poppy pods bursting with opium resin were also collected but no sign of the growers. This drug eradication program funded by the US Drug Enforcement Agency has been described as one of the most successful in the world. #mekong #mekongriver #poppies #opium #goldentriangle
