The Mekong comes crashing out of Laos through 6 miles of cataracts known as Khone Falls — the barrier that dashed the hopes of French Explorers searching for an inland trade route to China. The Khone Falls are the largest in Southeast Asia, and at 35,376 feet (10,783 m) wide, it is the widest waterfall in theworld. The Khone has the greatest volume of the world’s waterfalls, its 2,500,000 gallons (9,500,000 litres) per second being nearly double that of Niagara Falls.
