Aksum is a bustling city which has been thriving since the 1st century AD, and is situated 150km southwest of the Red Sea. You can find spectacular mountain scenery nearby, and the area generally has a pleasantly warm and sunny climate with a rainy season in July and August. The city is home to some of the largest monolithic carvings in the world, with large stone stelae marking the burials of some of the most prominent figures of the Aksumite empire. Aksum is also a vibrant commercial centre which has access to goods imported from the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean, and there’s plenty of delicious local food and drink to sample too.
