#GagosianSpotlight: “Rembrandt is like a Beethoven, a Shakespeare. He’s that level of humanity, of someone that can turn that screw inside you.”
—Jenny Saville
Taking a raw and fragmented approach to figuration informed by the paintings of Francis Bacon, Willem de Kooning, and Pablo Picasso, and drawing upon the dramatic lighting of work by Diego Velázquez and Rembrandt, Jenny Saville melds disparate art historical sources with a deft handling of volume and luminosity.
Rembrandt in particular has provided an enduring and profound source of inspiration for Saville; in the 2019 exhibition “Visions of the Self: Rembrandt and Now” at Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, London, another of Saville’s self-portraits was featured as a counterpoint to his “Self-Portrait with Two Circles,” highlighting her impasto brushwork and lyrical representation of human flesh and bone. Follow the link in our bio to watch a video in which Saville details the extensive influence Rembrandt has had on her painting practice.
