Today in 1866, a bill to create regiments of Black soldiers, who would become known as Buffalo Soldiers, was before Congress.
Samuel Bridgwater, a Buffalo Soldier, joined in the 1880s. After being wounded fighting in the Philippines, he served as a cook. Eventually, the Bridgwaters established themselves in Montana, buying property, raising their children, and being active in community affairs. Click the link in the bio to learn more.
