In the summer of 1913, four suffragists rode this yellow-and-black wagon from New York to Boston. Their goal: gather crowds and convince them to support women's right to vote. Their journey was followed closely in "The Woman's Journal," which described how the activists spent their days "playing the hurdy-gurdy to collect a crowd, making suffrage speeches, selling The Woman's Journal, selling banners and pennants, hat bands and buttons and taking collections." (Swipe above to see a photo of the suffragists—and their wagon—in action, courtesy of @librarycongress).

Seven years later, after a grueling state-by-state ratification battle, supporters of women's suffrage could celebrate the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which declared that citizens' right to vote could no longer be denied "on account of sex."

Ratified on August 26, 1920—100 years ago this month—the 19th Amendment was a critical milestone in women's fight for the rights as citizens. After its passage, many women were able to vote in U.S. elections for the first time. But the 19th Amendment was an imperfect victory. For decades after the 19th Amendment became law, many women—especially poor women and women of color—were kept from polls through violence, intimidation, poll taxes, literacy tests, whites-only primaries, and citizenship restrictions. Overcoming these barriers required decades of organizing and court battles. Women's fight for their full rights as citizens continues to this day.

This August, we'll exploring the long history of women's fight for their rights—and we won't be alone. Follow #19SuffrageStories all month to discover to hear from @librarycongress, @USNatArchives, and @スミソニアン博物館 about the many, diverse women who fought for voting rights, long before and after the 19th Amendment was ratified.
