A baby Asian elephant named Avi died 27 days after he was born, having struggled with health and developmental problems since birth. Avi was euthanized and “passed away peacefully” Sunday morning, according to the St. Louis Zoo. Avi was born as part of a national program responsible for maintaining a healthy Asian elephant population in North American zoos. There are less than 3,500 Asian elephants left in the wild, and the species is in danger of extinction because of ivory poaching and habitat destruction, the St. Louis Zoo said.
