Recently I @malene.barnett unloaded these ceramic sculptures from the kiln. The finish is underglaze fired at a low temperature. When, I shared them @studiolani told me that the hair looked like “Kiko” which is a hairstyle. At first I wasn’t familiar with the Yoruba word that described the style, but after doing some research, I found images of hair threading. This is when I realized I’d worn the hairstyle many times before without knowing the history. I loved how the connection to my heritage showed up naturally.
.
I also realized when a person is connected to their culture’s legacy, it shows up naturally, it’s a part of their DNA. #noexplanationsareneeded. I’m sure it’s hard to choose one, but which cultural tradition shows up most often in your life? For me it’s being a maker of handmade objects, it’s in my DNA. #shareculturaltraditions
