In 2017 and again in 2020, we asked them to reassess their outdated view on declawing cats. After getting no response, we decided to do a respectful social media campaign asking them to pay attention to this important issue. They responded with their best effort, which wasn't very strong. We suspect that it is weak because it was either written by vets or for vets: “American Humane encourages cat owners to defer to veterinarians on what’s best for each patient and client.” American Humane, that certainly was not written to protect cats. So we asked them, once again, to completely condemn declawing. They came back with this: We oppose declawing "when it is performed solely for the convenience of the guardian." Well, American Humane, what does that mean? Do you support declawing cats for all the other unjustifiable reasons like protecting human health and to keep cats in their homes? We have painstakingly proved to you that those reasons are not valid! Why can't you just say the right thing? Please politely encourage American Humane to stop hurting the cause with their weak and ambiguous statement that is clearly written in language that protects the vets who want to still declaw. It’s so easy. Just do the right thing or get out of the game. If their statement were written to protect cats, it would be strong and say, "We condemn declawing cats or any animals for any reason. Removal of physical pathology in a toe is a therapeutic procedure that we do not call declawing." American Humane, please remove your position statement all together if you can't be humane.
