Ethical access is important. If the access connects to the unkind things we do, it means everything. Although this operation may be legal, sand mining is often done illegally under cover of night. We spent time along many rivers in northern India where illegal sand mining took place. Always welcome, within seconds of saying I was a photographer, the response was, "No photos!". It wasn't until reaching the Son River in Bihar that I knew someone, who knew someone, who knew someone else who might give us access. An overnight stay in Dheri, the next morning, I met someone who knew all the other someone's. Greeted warmly and welcomed for chai, he assured me his sand mining activities were legal, but all the rest of the vast machine activity within walking distance, maybe not. It was strange, the man had a security guard who openly carried a giant shotgun and joined us for chai. I realized perhaps his sand extraction for India's booming construction industry was legit, he might be needing protection from others…there are many news reports of killings and vendetta's in his profession. After pleasant talks learning about this business, he said I could photograph whatever I wished, as often as I liked. That evening the shoreline along the Son was alive in big moving machines, filling trucks with sand lit like discos while the river was low before monsoon season. With all the unfathomable grains of sand in the Son, we might imagine removing some would not matter. Amplify it by hundreds, maybe thousands of mining operations across India's vast river systems, and we have an environmental catastrophe like nowhere else on earth. Altering entire ecosystems, destroying habitat, endangering river dolphins, and eroding land that directly affects people's livelihoods and our planet.
