Of the three units of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in #Oregon, the Painted Hills Unit is the most visited. With vibrant shades of red, yellow, orange and black highlighting the curved and striped hillsides, it's easy to see why this place is so popular. Each colored layer represents a long past chapter of time, slowly revealing plant and animal fossils from 30 million years ago. Changing light and moisture levels drastically affect the tones and hues visible in the hills. Photographers hoping to capture its unique beauty often get the results in late afternoon light.
