my performing arts past that I *forgot* about for almost 20 years:
this is from my 1989 piece *Evolution* I did when studying *Spiel-Musik-Tanz* (Play-Music-Dance) at DSHS Cologne.
*Play* included Commedia dell’arte elements, acrobatics and a solid introduction into miming and slapstick, *Music* was for example body music (if I remember right *beat boxing* was not a term than) and *Dance* was, well, Dance.
.
We had to study a lot of theory and history too.
One semester for example I struggled with a choreography for Micheal Jackson’s *Smooth Criminal*, when the teacher told me that Marcel Marceau, the father of modern miming, was friends with Michael Jackson for nearly 20 years and Jackson said he used some of Marceau's techniques in his own dance steps, that motivated me to at least try to cope a bit harder.
.
As much as I love modern movement culture and the exchange on social media, we have not to forget where things come from, how they are related and that nothing actually is new. Bruce Lee learned from Mohammed Ali’s footwork by watching it in reverse over and over again, Michael Jackson (who still is inspiring for his dancing and choreography) learned from Marcel Marceau and I (and this is the reason for this post) realize more and more how much what I do nowadays owes to my seven years of studying performing arts and coaching circus kids!
.
If you studied *Spiel-Musik-Tanz* with Anne and Wolfgang Tiedt or with Gaby Marquardt (who introduced me to Feldenkrais) too please let me know!
.
Finally @gregsilverback !
