She was 15 years old when the Bosnian war broke out. “Studying and creating art during this time kept me motivated and focused, and it gave me some much-needed direction,” says Yellena, who now lives in Portland, Oregon. “It felt really good to keep creating amidst all the chaos and destruction around me. It engrained in me the feeling that whatever is happening around me at any point in my life, I can always turn to creating,” she says.⁣ ⁣ Yellena’s abstract compositions, full of unreal flora and fauna, explore the “intricate and delicate organic forms within an imaginary ecosystem to create a peaceful spot, a place one might go for comfort from a storm, a place of calm amidst churning.”⁣ ⁣ She doesn’t plan her work in advance, and says her creative process is liberating, reflecting the sense of wonder and exploration she hopes her viewer experiences through her work.⁣ ⁣ “I think after going through the war and experiencing so much despair and destruction, I needed to surround myself with as much beauty as I can,” she explains. “I feel on some level, my artwork is an attempt to create this self-sufficient, flourishing utopian place where everything thrives in perfect balance.”⁣ ⁣ #ThisWeekOnInstagram⁣ ⁣ Art by @yellenajames」8月19日 1時13分
