On Tuesday, eight oocytes (immature eggs cells) from Fatu and two oocytes from Najin were harvested at @Olpejeta Conservancy in northern Kenya by a consortium of scientists from Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (@leibnizizw), @KenyaWildlifeService and @SafariParkDvurKralove.

Fatu and her mother, Najin, are the last two northern white rhinos alive on the planet, and this work may very well save the species. Both rhinos are doing well, and the procedures went exactly as planned. Scientists at the #Avantea clinic in Italy are awaiting the arrival of the oocytes, which are on their way. In this video, Fatu wakes up from anesthesia. It’s been exactly a year since the first ovum was picked up, and since then, three viable embryos have been created and are awaiting suitable surrogates. If all goes to plan, Tuesday's procedure will lead to more. I am filled with hope at all this team has achieved.
