Photo by @celestesloman This portrait of Michelle Duster holding a framed picture of her great-grandmother Ida B. Wells is from a series highlighting the centennial of women's suffrage for National Geographic's August issue. This year marks the anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women's constitutional right to vote. This project celebrates people who are bridging the gap between the past and the future of women's rights. Wells was a pioneering African-American journalist, educator, and activist. Duster is an award-winning writer, speaker, educator, and champion of racial and gender parity. She has written, edited, or contributed to over 10 books; two include the writings of her great-grandmother.
