Show us your suffrage selfie! #WomensEqualityDay is Aug. 26, for the anniversary of the 19th Amendment becoming law, and we're inviting you to use the new voting-inspired GIFs we released with @usnatarchives and @librarycongress.
Stick them on your Instagram Stories by tapping the sticker icon and searching for #19SuffrageStories. Tag us and we'll share some of our favorites!
Then check out #19SuffrageStories to learn about women who worked for the vote both before and after the amendment, because the fight for voting rights didn't end in 1920.
We've added some flair to this portrait of Belva Ann Lockwood, who ran for president twice, even when she couldn’t vote. The Equal Rights Party nominated her as its presidential candidate in 1884 and 1888. Lockwood’s platform focused on women’s rights issues, particularly suffrage, temperance, and reform for divorce and marriage laws.
This photograph of Lockwood, c. 1880 by Benjamin Joseph Falk, is in our @smithsoniannpg. #BecauseOfHerStory
