Photo by @laurelchor To local resident Dan Yiu, Cheung Chau Island represents two things that Hong Kong has lost: a sense of community and freedom. In the wake of the new national security law, which essentially criminalizes dissent, I asked Hong Kongers where they feel the most connected to the city and took their portraits there. Yiu, who is an educator, now worries about schools’ independence: “A lot of my teacher friends, they're very scared. But they feel that they do not have the strength, the power to do anything.” Follow @laurelchor for more on #HongKong and the #nationalsecuritylaw.
