They are descendants from a wild canid living in the highlands of New Guinea. In the 50’s thru 70’s a small number of these animals were brought to North America and a captive breeding program was initiated to preserve this animal. In the ensuing years the habitat of these dogs was changed by humans. Deforestation occurred in many areas and humans brought industry to these places. People also brought modern dogs with them. There was a concern that NGSDs in the wild were lost forever. Recent genetic studies performed on free ranging dogs living in the highlands of New Guinea show there is a high likelihood that wild living singers still exist and they might have remained genetically pure.
