Photo by Robbie Shone @shonephoto In the Italian Dolomites, the tunnel complex known as the Lagazuoi Tunnels was the site of fierce combat during the First World War. For two years the Austrians defended the top of the mountain while the Italians attacked from their position on the Martini Ledge below. On June 20, 1917, after six months of tunneling 1,100 meters (3,600 feet) into the mountain, the Italians detonated 33,000 kilograms of blasting gelatin in order to dislodge the Austrians. But the Austrians, hearing the construction work, abandoned their position before the explosion, and all the efforts of the Italians were wasted.
