For the past 15 years, Susanna Clarke has suffered from an elusive, debilitating illness that, at some points, confined her to extreme solitude. Her latest novel, “Piranesi,” is narrated by a man who doesn’t remember his own name, and is unaware of any world beyond the house he resides in. Yet Clarke did not initially notice the resonances between her narrator’s captivity and her own. “I don’t think I realized, straight-away. . . .
