Looming over the majestic dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in #Colorado, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains are putting on their #autumn decorations. From a distance, groves of quaking aspens stand out in patches of orange and gold. Remarkable trees, they grow in clusters where they get lots of sunshine. Often creating new trees from a huge system of roots, a stand of aspens can be a single organism, each tree genetically identical. Individual trees may live up to 150 years, but the parent root system may be up to one million years old. Isn’t that incredible?
