Photo by @Gerd Ludwig / 30 years ago, dimly seen through the fog, a communication tower sits squatly atop the summit of the Brocken in Germany, where it once cocked an ear toward transmitters in the West. It served as the westernmost Soviet tower in Germany. Elsewhere in the Harz Mountains, other installations committed similar espionage for NATO allies, making East and West Germany among the most spied-upon nations.

Several years after German reunification—which took place 30 years ago today, October 3, 1990—the tower domes were dismantled. Today is now celebrated as a public holiday, “German Unity Day,” across Germany.
