Swipe to step into this woodblock print made in China around 1700 👉

The scene illustrates a verse of the poem ‘Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup’ by the Tang dynasty poet Du Fu, who lived between AD 712–770. The poem relates the drinking habits of eight high officials, poets and calligraphers during the reign of emperor Minghuang who ruled AD 713–756.

In this scene the emperor is shown sitting on a terrace watching the scholar Li Bai, who is kneeling. Li Bai whirls his brush and – inspired by wine – creates a series of poems.

The inscription reads ‘[Give Li Bai one] dou of wine [and he writes] a hundred poems – [after] records of the Tang [dynasty]’ 🍷🖌 One dou is a measurement equivalent to about 10 litres.
