National Geographic Travelさんのインスタグラム写真 - (National Geographic TravelInstagram)「Photos by @MichaelGeorge / Alma is one of those don’t-sneeze-or-you’ll-miss-it towns. Though the population is only 232 people, it has a distinctive feature that is almost unmatched in all the world. Alma sits on the Bay of Fundy, an area with one of the most dramatic tidal changes on the planet. It feels like throughout the day, this small town is taking one long, deep breath and then letting it all back out. In only six hours, the water will rise or fall nearly 42 feet (13 meters). The boats you see here, looking decommissioned and sitting on the mud, are floating in the water by nightfall. Nearly all the families in Alma are related to the lobster trade. I somehow managed to plan my trip to arrive on Alma’s biggest night of the year, when the population balloons to over 600 with visitors. The lobster fleet launch is the only night of the year where all 10 lobster boats head out to sea at the same time, just after midnight. The celebration includes bagpipers dressed up as lobsters, face painting, bonfires, and fireworks exploding as the last boat leaves the harbor.
